I seem to be having the same problem, and have just posted on it! Could Amazon work to find some ways to make international payments? Possibly Paypal, where small sums are involved?

Amazon doesn't seem to have any interest in opening up the Kindle (either the reader itself or the sale of e-books) to anyone beyond the United States, at least not at present. This is probably because the Kindle is linked to the Sprint telephone network in the US. To roll out in another country pretty much means getting a similar contractual arrangement with a cell phone (mobile phone) company there. Where is there a population base as inviting as the 300 million in the US? China, I suppose, but that poses huge language problems. The Kindle is pretty much built around the roman alphabet. Asian written languages (and even Russian and Greek) don't mesh very well with the Kindle 'page'.

I suspect the UK will be the next field for Amazon to plow. But will Amazon still need us independent publishers to make a splash there? It will have the existing installed base of 300,000 books to serve as a lure. Are we worth the bother?

This Sucks, surely us international marketers could still publish to US Citizens & others (when Amazon opens up to them), although I understand that the readers need to be US Based at the momnt, there is no reason for International publishers not being open to publish, Amazon does have the payment platform in affiliates, so that can't be the problem

Kim -

I agree that it stinks. As a Kindle reader (as well as publisher), I'd like to be able to check out what authors from other countries are writing on my Kindle (beyond any freebies I can download from the net). As I understand it, Amazon has this policy for tax payment purposes. I *don't* why or agree with it, but it seems to be pretty iron-clad.

If you can find someone in the U.S. who can act as your agent, that would likely work. Not an ideal solution by any stretch, but there aren't many other options right now, unfortunately. :-(

Cheers,
Mike

Kim, it's even worse than you think. You can publish your e-book on Mobipocket, and it will gravitate over to the Amazon store as a Kindle offering. But you won't get paid! Mobi pays you for sales by all vendors except Amazon, and for that you have to sign up with Vendor Central--which has the same US address etc requirements. I suspect that there are dozens if not hundreds of non-US publishers who have titles languishing in Vendor Central.

You're quite right, of course. Even if the Kindle isn't or can't realistically be sold outside the US, there's no reason why non-US publishers shouldn't be able to create for it.

(Except, as I pointed out earlier, the independent publishers no longer add a great deal of value to the Kindle platform.)

Incidentally, I've asked HarperCollins why a book of mine isn't available in digital editions. It will be interesting to see what they say.

(changed should to shouldn't! - double negative needed)

I use http://www.booksmith.ca

They helped me with formatting for Kindle, uploaded my books, collect my royalties and send them to me. (I can't say enough about these people. They solved an insoluable problem for me.)
