That is certainly MY question. I sort of assumed that would be part of their announcement. Obviously if you can take a PDF and sell it on Amazon.com, many publishers could supply a Kindle version of MANY more books almost overnight.

It appears that Kindle and Kindle DX cannot support more than text files converted to html at this point, as it takes far too long to code the books in the proper format to even display. To this date the formatting FAQ do not even support a question of PDFs. Mobipocket has been entirely silent about everything since I signed on with them.
The other alternative is to post everything possible in text on Kindle and sell PDF ebooks through Lulu, which continues to provide full service ebook publishing with full color as downloads. That's what I do, since I gave up on Kindle for images a LONG time ago.

Therimouse -- that is an accurate statement of what is publicly known to date -- however, I am asking Amazon for a clarification of what their strategy is going forward.

According to the WSJ of May 7 2009, the Kindle DX can display Adobe Acrobat files which I assume are in PDF format. Sooooo, how can we upload a PDF for Amazon to sell for us???

Has anybody else noticed that DTP is not answering these forums or their e-mail lately...?

Mobipocket support said 'no, ask digitalrights@amazon.com'.

I think the idea of PDF support is supposed to be a convenience factor for those who have PDF files they wish to read on their Kindles. I strongly suggest to all Kindle publishers that if you are really intending to support the Kindle DX, that you do not want to upload a native PDF file. A PDF on the Kindle will be interpreted as a series of page images (as that is what a PDF actually is to an extent). A customer who buys your books will expect to have full Kindle functionality, including using the dictionary and resizing text. Converting a PDF to Kindle format allows that. A PDF read in its native format will not.

Wheelman, when you say "a PDF on the kindle will be interpreted as a series of images", are you basing this on authoritative knowledge of the feature/function of the "native PDF reader" that is shipped on the DX?
In any event, your comment is irrelevant to the point of the original post which is when will Amazon actually enable publishers to use PDF, a standard format for publishing, and one which enables far greater control over presentation than Kindle's dumbed-down HTML.
In the OP I asked a direct, specific, and entirely reasonable question and I am very disappointed that Amazon's DTP administrators have not bothered to acknowledge, let alone answer, the question.

Given that Kindle editions must be read on two sizes of Kindle screen and also on iPhone/Touch/etc screens, I don't see how PDFs would ever work. The text line needs to flow to fit the screen, as is done in the various Mobipocket emulators.
It is possible to read a PDF on a Sony Reader but it isn't an especially happy experience. Most people go with the digital text instead.
DTP Admin rarely visits here, so you can hope for an 'official' answer but probably won't get one except from fellow publishers.

I understand about the text flow issue , but I don't care if people can read my books on Kindles 1 and 2. I only want to know whether I will be able to upload and sell PDFs to Kindle DX.

Not yet. Perhaps never.
Except for newspapers, magazines, and perhaps textbooks, I doubt Amazon would go to the difficulty of posting DX-only edtions of its Kindle e-books.
