Soho, actually you are incorrect on CreateSpace. They DO require a U.S. Tax ID #. If you are a non-U.S. member and your country has an established tax rate treaty with the U.S., you may be eligible for treaty withholdings rates if you provide CreateSpace with a valid W-8BEN -- and in that case you still need to apply for a TIN from the IRS.

Doesn't make sense.
They could simply withhold 30% withholding tax for the IRS if someone don't have a Tax ID number, just as CreateSpace do (and smashwords, and Lulu, and and and ... )

We are waiting for this too.

Honestly I can't understand at all why this takes so many months (years?), and why amazon is promising this now for such a long time, without changing anything yet.

Possibly there would be no change at all if there wouldn't be serious competitor new in this game .... which is smashwords. They DO accept international publishers/authors, they DO pay a higher royalty rate, and they DO distribute ebooks to amazon for kindle, barnes&noble for nook, sony for reader, and stanza for iphone.

I am publishing through CreateSpace, which is an Amazon company, and there is no problem at all to accept international customers and to simply withhold 30% withholding tax.

I do have an US bank account, and simply withholding the tax would be somewhat easy for amazon.

So WHY is this still a problem for amazon DTP?
Why does it need months to start to do this (probably it would be a day of work only for the programming/accounting team to this up...)

Any insights or more detailed info, other than "we are working on it" and "we can't give a time line"?

amazon is giving International authors/publishers no other choice than going with their competitors, and once these feel comfortable they will be "lost forever" for amazon...

So I would really ask and urge amazons DTP team to hurry up "a bit".

We have 160 books published so far with CreateSpace, and we're just starting to publish ebooks too. I am following this forum posts about a year now, and I am waiting for that good news to come since weeks and months. But ... as they aren't any good news yet, we now have to go the smashwords route.

If there IS any change to happen within the next week or two, I would appreciate to receive information about it within the next days.

Thanks in advance!

Dear Publisher,

We are working towards enabling non US publishers to setup accounts on DTP. At present, only publishers with US billing address and bank account are able to setup account on Amazon DTP. Unfortunately, at this point of time we cannot provide a time frame. However, please note that we are working on it and plan to make DTP available to non-US authors soon.

Thank you.

At this point, a paypal account would not suffice. Amazon is requiring a US bank account, address and Tax ID number. They need to report payments to the IRS hence the reason for the tax number.
