Basically it's html. If your diacriticals have named html entities, you're fine. For example a & followed by auml; gives you ä.

The software doesn't like numerical entities, however. That's a change from the early days, when I used them all the time.

I've only ever seen the one default font on Kindle. Someone claims to have seen Courier, but I never have and wouldn't know how to evoke it.

No, there is no facility to automatically convert books that are in the "search inside" or "look inside" programs to a reflowable text Kindle format.

You are right, cub, in that the source of the search inside/look inside feature is an embedded pdf.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. Sorry for not being here to aknowlege your help at the time. I'm just wonder though, if the answers are still true.

The reason I'm asking is because in our advantage account there is a page that claims to offer an option of simply selecting any title that currently is enrolled in search inside the book and amazon will just convert it to kindle for you. It even suggests that you can simply send a physicial book to amazon and they will convert it to kindke for you at no cost as long as sales for the tiles are good enough.

Of course the form theye is asking for an upload of content. So it's not really operable. Not only that, but search inside no longer convert phycial books to their digital format. Our last batch was returned to sender.

But is all this pointing to a new free way to make titles available on kindle in the near future or will publishers still have to spend time or money on formatting?

The upload was taking too long so I stopped it. When I went back to the upload there was a preview available although it appeared that nothing uploaded. I braved one more tweak and reuploaded and it works!

After a month I'm back working on this file. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

dtpadmin - I have taken the taken the text within the body and placed it into the body of 3 works that have uploaded without issues. No luck

I have checked to make sure there are no issues with the coding within the body. I find none.

There are no comment issues in any other files. I'm not even sure what the information supplied refers to.

inkline-press - I've tried uploading the file alone and zipped. No luck. I have also deleted images and tried that way, no luck.

I have also tried using all caps and all lower case for "body" all within <>. the () listed in my original post was used by DTP in the error message.

I still receive the same error.

I did make a DRM selection when I came back, that was not an option when I started this, and a preview was available although no upload appeared to work. I made a couple small changes, spacing within the title, and was once again faced with the error.

I am uploading it again and it is still working after 15 min. Not usual and not a good sign.

We'll see what happens.

If anyone else has a suggestion it will be appreciated.

And thank YOU for posting THAT, occnnel4!

I'm having the exact same problem with TOC and Start.

In fact, I went to Joshua's website to download the tools he mentioned in his book, in hopes of finding the answer, but couldn't find them.

Actually, I did see them the first time I looked, but when I went back to take another look, I couldn't find then again.

I emailed Joshua about that, but haven't yet had an answer

When I get around to writing "CJ's Easy as Pie", the purchase of Joshua's book is going to be high on the list, as a way to avoid wasting those zillions of dollars worth of time, trying to figure out these things we think we should already be able to do ourselves.

CJ

PS btw... I'll check your book on my K2, if you will check mine on your K1... what you think?

Joshua - Thanks for your reply. I think all of us underestimate how much trouble people with no familiarity with a particular process have in getting it done the first time. Just as a for instance, I was to the head banging point over trying to get my TOC and Start point as I wanted them using the Guides section of Mobi Creator. Finally, pretty much by accident I stumbled on the fact that for your instruction to work, I had to Browse to the html file of my book that was in the folder that the Mobi creation process created rather than the one I originally imported and then put the #TOC or #start on the end of that.

However, in that case I was able to see my results (or lack of them) on my Kindle 1 (and Kindle for PC which I've loaded on my computer). Since I have no Kindle 2 and can't test the whole navigation point process, making sure both that my coding works and that I haven't done anything that ruins something else, I've decided my book will have to do without.

Thanks for your book and the help it provides in all the ways that I CAN see on my K1.

I'm sorry my description was not specific enough. It is a little difficult to write about the NCX file functionality without just relying on readers to do some testing. I do give an example of the NCX layout in chapter 7 and I have a sample available on my Kindle Formatting website in the Files section.

http://kindleformatting.com/book/files.php

If you set up your NCX file as I describe in the book, then it should work fine.

However, despite my frequent testing, I have never been able to get the exact same functionality as you see in newspapers on the Kindle. Amazon is doing something special with their formatting to make that happen, and it is not documented anywhere. Like the Topaz format, that appears to be a private, Amazon-only function.
