Lindy -

As best I know, the sales rank normally won't appear until there's been at least one sale. However, you also have to keep in mind that we're all on the outside of the Amazon fishbowl trying to peer in: there is absolutely no transparency on their part about how the rankings work aside from the generic blurb you received. So, we may be right about this...or we may not. Logically, if a title hasn't had any sales, you wouldn't think it would have a sales rank because...it hasn't had any sales! But only the Amazon programmers know the truth.

For what it's worth, here's the best explanation I've found so far on the rankings system, from sort of an external analytics perspective: http://www.rampant-books.com/mgt_amazon_sales_rank.htm.

Cheers,
Mike

That's a good question! I don't know if there's a time limit or not, but I believe there is a "number limit" - the last I recall is that a customer can get a refund for up to ten books, and after that their account is disabled. I can't say if that is true, because I haven't verified it myself, but that was the latest I remember...

It's a rainy Tuesday!

Unless they've changed things recently, you *cannot* simply redownload the revised copy of your book: you'll just get the same copy you already have. You should be able to (it only make sense!), but - again, unless DTP has changed this recently - a number of us verified that this was the case.

The only way a reader can get the revised version is to call Amazon, request a refund for the title, and then buy the new one.

Dan -

I got a notification from DTP about a week ago that my book got put in the pokey after I made a price change. They sent out the canned letter about proving my ownership of the rights to it, and I told them I owned it, nobody's ever had the rights besides me, it's not public domain, etc.

Fortunately, that apparently did the trick: this morning the title had changed from the "lock down" statement in the DTP dashboard to the "your title is being published", and as of this evening the title is available and ready in the dashboard again.

So, for what it may be worth... ;-)

Good grief! Y'all have certainly been through the ringer on this stuff!

I guess my only major complaint to this point has been that my main seller got put in jail last week after I updated the price. I knew it would probably happen, but like many other folks I don't have a tablet from God saying I'm the rights holder. So, I'm going to take Vicky's advice and file a DMCA counter notification. I sent an email reply to the Amazon folks but, not surprisingly, haven't heard anything back. The book is still up for sale and sales are being recorded in DTP, but it's been locked in the dashboard, etc.

The case with Scribd is ridiculous - that turned me off of that venue right there. Ugh.

As for DRM, it all goes back to the difference between physical and electronic. A book is a single physical instance, and chances are an author isn't going to lose a lot of revenue (in the great scheme of things) by handing it off to somebody else. But electronic media it's obviously not the same, as you well know! I personally wish there was a way to transfer ownership of a DRM'd title, like it was a unique electronic instance of the book. I'm sure someone will come up with a way to do that at some point, but it's not here yet.

In the meantime, I'm wondering how DTP is planning to handle the flood of non-U.S. authors when they finally open the doors to them. Now *that* should be interesting... <cringe>

Cheers,
Mike

I have to admit that I've been skeptical about doing this sort of thing because, as you touched on, Dan, I've been paranoid about the encryption issue.

On the other hand, the number of people who would abuse this sort of thing is pretty small, I think. And if somebody did post a bootleg copy of a book, I suppose there are enough options available (from a nice "please take this down" to suing them for piracy) to sort things out.

Vicky, thanks for posting your experiences on this. I've actually been doing okay with Kindle sales, and Mobipocket sales have actually been doing great the last few months. I've also put one of my books on Smashwords, but not much success there to this point. In all fairness, I've hardly done any promoting at all in the last few months, nor have I posted much on here, because I've just been focusing on writing (finished one novel in August and am about 1/4 through the next one). Not enough hours in the day!

Anyway, I think I'm going to post the rest of my books to Smashwords, as well, then probably take a stab at selling them direct off the site along the lines of Vicky's suggestions and see what happens... :-)

Cheers,
Mike
