Re: Making a book cover.

My idea of a book cover may be much more simplistic than most.

First, I don't believe the cover has to have been created by a professional to be eye catching. I use current photographs when I can, and being digital, they reproduce sharp and clear. I use a simple Hallmark program where I have a choice of fonts, borders, etc. I design my cover, print it on good quality photo paper, then scan it to my computer. From there I go to Firefox and upload it. They have all turned out to be nice and sharp on Amazon and I've actually had several compliments about some of them on the discussion boards.

As I said, I realize this simple process may not be appropriate for everyone but it works for me. And it's a good thing, because I don't have the technical skills to do anything else!

Of course I can't be certain. But I do think $5.99 might have been too much for some Kindlers to take a chance on an unknown author.

At some future date, I may consider raising the price again but not until I feel pretty certain that my sales won't drop. And I don't know how I'd determine that!

I started out with my murder mysteries priced at $5.99 and my sales were okay, increasing every month but not substantially.

When I lowered them to $2.99, my sales increased so quickly that I have left them at that price. They have continued to increase each month so I will leave them at $2.99 because of the 70% royalty.

However, if my sales rise dramatically when the price of books from mainstream publishers goes up, then I will certainly consider increasing them by at least one dollar.

I have two other titles priced at $1.79 and $0.99 that I will not hesitate to raise to $2.99 before June. I have a Christmas short story that I will leave as is at $0.99 unless, as Cub says, I can combine, lengthen or otherwise alter to justify pricing it $2.99.

I do think this royalty change along with the ability of publishers to set their own prices may be good for epublishers. I'll certainly have to think twice (or more) before I download my favorite mainstream-published MM author on my Kindle if I can buy the the hard copy for close to the same price. After reading the hard copy, I can pass it along to our local Friends of the Library book store and get a tax break. Can't do that if it's on my Kindle.
